REVIEW
The Cambridge News: Paul Holland reviews Taming of
the Shrew: "If I be waspish, beware
my sting or something like that. There were a few wasps in Robinson
College gardens last night (Thurs, July 24) for the performance of
Taming of the Shrew due to the picnics, but there was a lot of fun
to be had by cast and audience alike.
This is the third show in the Shakespeare Festival I have seen and
it was a delight. Arriving just in time to catch the opening on what
was a hot July evening my partner and I were greeted with a lawn full
of a picnicking audience.
We quickly sat down and stuffed a few sandwiches down our throats,
batting the wasps away. Then, as if a summer's evening in a purpose-built
theatre garden, with a picnic wasn't enough - the play started. And
it was funny, frantic and relaxed. The central relationship between
the shrewish Kate and the boorish Petruchio was, almost literally,
a riot.
The wooing of Kate in the play is always a stage battle of words which
doesn't need swords to draw blood and this was one of the best I have
seen.
The play run's until Saturday at Robinson and then transfers to Trinity
College gardens from August 18 to September 6."
